We calculate your IQ

We use the official method for IQ testing to calculate your score accurately and fairly. First, we calculate your raw IQ score by analyzing your answers, the time you take to respond, and the highest level you achieve out of 20 difficulty levels.

Next, we calculate your z-score, which shows how far your score deviates from the average IQ score of 100, based on standard deviations. Finally, this z-score is converted into a percentile, which indicates what percentage of the population scored lower than you. For example, if your percentile is 98, it means your score is higher than 98% of people.

Your results are also placed on a bell curve, a graph showing how IQ test scores are distributed across the population. Most people (about 68%) score between 85 and 115, which is considered the average IQ range. Scores above 130 are classified as "high IQ scores" or "gifted." Scores below 70 are considered lower IQ scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IQ test?

An IQ test, or Intelligence Quotient test, measures how well you think and solve problems. It looks at skills like reasoning, problem-solving, and understanding patterns. Like most intelligence tests, the goal is to see how your thinking abilities compare to most people. The test gives you an IQ score, which shows how your abilities compare to the average person. Most people score around 100, and this number can help highlight your strengths and potential.

Is IQ the only measure of general intelligence?

IQ is not the only measure of general intelligence. While IQ tests are designed to assess certain cognitive abilities such as logical reasoning, problem-solving, and spatial skills, they do not capture the full spectrum of human intelligence. Other forms of intelligence, such as emotional intelligence (EQ), creativity, practical intelligence, and social intelligence, are not typically measured by IQ tests but are still highly important. For instance, EQ is often considered even more crucial than IQ for achieving success in life.

Moreover, Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences suggests that there are several distinct types of intelligence, including linguistic, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic, and existential intelligences. This shows that intelligence has many sides and depends on the situation. No single test can fully measure a person's abilities.

What does an official IQ test look like?

Official IQ tests, like the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and Stanford-Binet tests, are comprehensive assessments administered by trained professionals. These standardized tests evaluate various cognitive abilities, including logical reasoning, math skills, spatial intelligence, and language abilities. CheckIQ draws inspiration from these official tests to provide a reliable and cheaper alternative. With a range of IQ question types and adaptive difficulty, it offers a modern twist on the traditional intelligence quotient test.

What are IQ scores and what do they mean?

An IQ test, or Intelligence Quotient test, measures how well you think, solve problems, and understand patterns. It gives you an IQ score that shows how your abilities compare to others. It's important to note that different tests, such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), Stanford-Binet, and Raven’s Matrices, may have varying naming conventions and scoring ranges, though they generally adhere to similar percentile distributions. IQ test scores are grouped into IQ ranges that represent different levels of intellectual ability:
  • Below 70: Indicates significant challenges in intellectual functioning.
  • 70–84: Below average intelligence, where extra support might be helpful.
  • 85–114: Average intelligence, where most people (about 68%) fall.
  • 115–129: Above average intelligence, often associated with strong problem-solving skills.
  • 130–144: High intelligence, which is rare and typically seen in about 2% of the population.
  • 145 and above: Exceptionally high intelligence, often referred to as "genius" or "near-genius" level.
Lower IQ scores are typically fall below 85. Average IQ scores are comprise between 85 and 115, while higher IQ scores are any scores above 130.

What's a good IQ score?

A good IQ score depends on the context and purpose of the test. Generally, an IQ score above 100 is considered above average, while IQ scores above 130 are often regarded as exceptional. High IQ scores may qualify you for memberships in high-IQ societies like Mensa. However, IQ scores are just one way to measure intelligence and don’t account for skills like emotional intelligence or creativity. Remember, a good IQ score is one that reflects your unique strengths and abilities.

While IQ is partly determined by genetics, certain activities can enhance your cognitive abilities and improve test performance. Regularly engaging in problem-solving exercises, practicing IQ test questions, and stimulating your mind in your free time through activities like puzzles, reading, and learning new skills can help.

How long does this online IQ test take?

The time needed to complete an IQ test depends on the IQ test types. Professional and standardized IQ tests, such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale or Binet Intelligence Scales, can take up to 2 hours. Online IQ tests, including those on CheckIQ, are generally shorter and can be completed in about 20-30 minutes. Note that shorter IQ tests (5 minutes) can not be considered reliable.

How should I best prepare for this home IQ test?

Preparing for an IQ test is simple and doesn’t require any special knowledge. The best way to prepare is by ensuring you are well-rested, mentally alert, and in a distraction-free environment. To familiarize yourself with the types of questions found on an IQ test, you can launch several IQ tests for free on CheckIQ or try a Mensa practice test for additional challenge and preparation.

Our IQ test generates new questions each time you take it, offering the same benefits as completing multiple practice tests while eliminating the bias of seeing repeated questions. This approach not only helps you prepare for our IQ test but also provides valuable intellectual stimulation, keeping the experience fresh and engaging. It’s also an excellent way to improve your IQ over time.

Should I retake this IQ test?

Retaking an IQ test can be beneficial, especially if you’re practicing or aiming to improve your performance. CheckIQ's large question pool ensures that you’ll encounter fresh challenges with every attempt. Retaking the test also helps refine your test-taking strategies and provides more accurate IQ test results. However, to avoid fatigue, give yourself enough time (5 to 7 days) between tests for optimal performance.

Are Online IQ Tests Real IQ Tests?

Online IQ tests can provide accurate results if they are designed using scientifically validated methodologies. Our online IQ test combines the best elements of classical and modern IQ tests to ensure reliability and accuracy. While online tests may not replace official IQ tests administered by licensed professionals such as clinical psychologists, they still offer a great alternative to standard IQ tests to measure your intelligence quickly and conveniently from the comfort of your home.

The best online IQ tests are adaptive, scientifically validated, and draw from established methodologies used in trusted tests like the WAIS, Stanford-Binet, and Raven’s Matrices. Reliable IQ tests like CheckIQ adjust the difficulty of questions dynamically based on your responses, ensuring a more personalized and accurate assessment of your cognitive abilities. Quick IQ tests that rely on a limited set of questions (ex: 15-20) are usually less reliable.

I have a high IQ. What’s next?

If you have a high IQ, you might qualify to join high-IQ societies like Mensa. Mensa is a high IQ society for people who score in the top 2% on the Mensa IQ test, equivalent to a 130 IQ. You may also apply using your GRE, ACT, or SAT scores, as well as results from popular IQ tests such as the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC). If you're not sure how far you are from Mensa's requirements, check our IQ conversion tools.

Membership in high IQ societies offers access to intellectual communities, exclusive events, and networking opportunities.

How is my IQ score calculated?

Your IQ score is calculated through a rigorous process that combines weighted scoring, statistical analysis, and normalization. Each question in the IQ test is designed to assess specific cognitive abilities, such as pattern recognition, abstract reasoning, and spatial awareness. The raw total score is determined by calculating a weighted sum of the scores for all questions, with the weights reflecting the cognitive skills involved. A time factor is then applied to account for response speed, as faster answers may indicate higher cognitive efficiency, though accuracy remains the primary focus. This total score is converted into a z-score, which measures how far your performance deviates from the mean score of the test population in terms of standard deviations. The z-score is then mapped onto the normal IQ distribution, which has a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Advanced mathematical interpolation is used to derive precise IQ values, even if they fall between defined points on the bell curve.
